To produce the models Richard made a steel drawing in his studio which was then turned into a 3D path. We ran a smoke simulation to follow this path and solidified into a mesh. After further editing with additional details the model was printed in resin - we outsourced this to a large resin print company that could print the piece in one piece. Printed in flexible TPU meant the prints could wobble and flex. As pressurised air was pumped through them they each made unique sounds. We love to push the printers to produce delicate works like this. All to correct scale we produced daisies, orchard grass, a closed dandelion and some robin feathers. All hand painted in house and handled with extreme care! We also made the angled tv support from cnc’ed ply and can be flat packed for future use. Printed in a bespoke dark blue translucent resin, allowing a soft glow from the screen inside. We also worked with Líadáin to make the box the print sits on. The box needed to house a screen that needed to be accessible, to do this we inset magnets to the print so it can be easily clipped off / on. We worked closely with him and Foundry Kowalski to produce high quality prints, at 0.08mm layer height, in castable PLA. Castable PLA can be used as replacement of the wax in investment casting, meaning the prints can be melted straight out and replaced with bronze. Each sculpture had to be carefully considered when printing to ensure maximum detail and for best casting results. The work was shown at NADA Miami, 2023, with The Artist Room Gallery. She provided the 3D model which we adapted to fit aluminium rods to hold the piece together and to allow movement for the individual sections. The parts were then printed in resin or PLA and fixed together. The whole piece was then given a coat of spray filler to ensure all seams and print lines were hidden. Rebeca then gave the piece the incredible prismatic finish! The work was shown as part of the Escala Collection at the Art Exchange.
